Oenalty for Starting a Hole Over Again Golf

So, you want to pattern a golf game hole? A beginner'due south guide to the do'south and don'ts

So, you lot want to exist a golf game-grade architect. Or, at least, you plan to enter the GOLF Magazine + Nicklaus Design Claiming.

Allow us to offer some advice from an expert in the field.

As a senior designer at Nicklaus Design, Chad Goetz will tell you that everything he and his colleagues do is dictated past the site they're given.

"It all begins and ends with the slice of land," Goetz says. "That, along with what the customer wants to reach."

Once that'southward been adamant, information technology's on to developing the course routing and rhythm, crafting holes that make the near of the terrain while providing varied looks and shot-making demands.

Each hole must fit into the overall rhythm of the course.

"Y'all've got to become with what the land gives you but you're likewise trying not to take six long par-4s in a row," Goetz says. "You want to mix it upward with diverse angles and lengths and wind directions to create a compelling challenge."

In short, designing an entire course is a very different job than dreaming up a single pigsty from scratch. Yet many of the same principles apply.

With the GOLF Magazine + Nicklaus Blueprint Claiming underway, GOLF.com asked Goetz to flesh out the fundamentals those in his business organization lean on when creating a hole.

Retrieve of them as your architecture guidelines: viii do's and don'ts of golf game design.

1. Start with the dark-green

The Golden Historic period architect A.W. Tillinghast likened greens to human faces, the defining feature on the body of a hole. What does that suggest? When you lot're sketching your pattern, the putting surface is a good place to first. Envision the shots you desire players to confront on their approaches — long, low runners? high-lofted irons? — and design the green accordingly, its shape, size and contouring suited to the shots you expect information technology to see. "It's tempting to have fun past throwing in a lot of wild contours or severe bunkering," Goetz says. "But call back that what y'all're doing needs to make sense in the larger context. It's going to dictate what you exercise with the rest of the hole."

two. Continue it entertaining

"Golf is a game," Goetz says. "Information technology should be fun." Of course, similar many elements of golf design, what qualifies as "fun" is subjective. But as a general rule, punishment does non equal pleasance. "Every grade has to accept a hardest hole," Goetz says. "They have their place, merely I don't necessarily think of them as being fun to play. So, if I'm designing a unmarried hole, over-the-acme difficult is probably not the way I'd go."

More alluring than a long, bunker-laden brute is, Goetz believes, a beguiling hole that presents a golfer with strategic choices. Do y'all play safe off the tee, knowing that y'all'll face a testier approach shot? Or rear back with your driver in hopes of setting upwards a simple pitch? That'due south the basic thinking, though the potential variations on the theme are boundless. "Adventure and reward is a phrase yous hear a lot because it's at the heart of a lot of what we do," Goetz says. "Nosotros're trying to create a puzzle for the golfer to solve that fits into the larger puzzle of the class." Now, that'south fun.

The best holes offer golfers multiple strategic options. Pictured here: the 6th at Punta Espada Golf Course, in Mexico.

3. Don't go full Golden Tee

A minefield of bunkers might look cool when you're doodling on a cocktail napkin. Ditto an isle tee playing to an island fairway and an isle green. Simply remember: You desire your doodle to play cool, besides. "I've played a few holes and idea, 'Wow, that must take looked really great on paper,'" Goetz says. Bottom line: If what you've sketched bears closer resemblance to a video game than a golf hole, you'd exist wise to scratch it and starting time again.

four. Consider contours

Sand and water are all well and expert. Only there are other ways to defend a golf pigsty. "It's piece of cake to throw 15 or 20 bunkers or a lake out at that place," Goetz says. "But some of the more interesting strategic concepts are created with topography." Think, for instance, of the greens at Augusta, which are built to defy certain angles from the fairway and leave you lot all but expressionless if you lot're above the pigsty. Or some fairways at the Olympic Club, which dogleg one style and tilt the other, request you to hit a draw or fade with the ball to a higher place or below your feet. "It's remarkable how even a subtle gradient or contour can affect a shot," Goetz says. "A lot of golfers might non think of them, but those factors have a huge influence on how a pigsty plays."

5. Allow for recoveries

Phil Mickelson smoking a 6-fe from the pine straw at Augusta. Tom Watson chipping in from the crude at Pebble Beach. Retrieve of some of golf'southward nigh memorable moments; many have been recovery shots. A well-designed hole should let for them. "With every hole, we're trying to ascertain how it should exist played, but we're also trying to determine what the penalty is if y'all don't play the correct shot. How is that going to set up?" Recovery shots phone call for skill and imagination, which translate into excitement. Equally satisfying as it is to bomb 1 down the middle, "a hole where that's the but option is pretty dull," Goetz says.

The dogleg-left par-5 13th at Augusta National is one of the all-time great risk-reward holes.

6. Place trouble in manifestly view

Bullheaded shots can be compelling. Simply a guiding philosophy at Nicklaus Design is to keep most targets and trouble in apparently view. "We might blind you on, say, a par-4, but that volition be part of the strategy," Goetz says. "For example, if yous play conservatively or hit a poor shot, now y'all can't meet everything in front end of you. Only typically, Jack works very hard to brand everything visible." If water awaits, he doesn't merely want yous to know it'south at that place. He wants you lot to be able to come across its edges. Same with greens. "We may not show you the unabridged putting surface," Goetz says. "Just we're trying to bear witness you the corners of it at to the lowest degree, so y'all take an idea of your limits."

7. Accommodate all abilities

One of the toughest aspects of golf design is walking the fine line of forgiveness, the better to appeal to a range of skills. "The question e'er is, 'How do you get in challenging for the expert player but enjoyable for a higher handicap?" Goetz says. 1 way to do that is with first tees, which create varied angles and differing demands. "If you lot have a dogleg, not simply does the hole go shorter from the frontwards tees, just it's also straighter," Goetz says. "And then that someone playing up tin hit a straight shot, whereas every bit someone from the dorsum has to have on angles." Given how far elite players hit information technology, forced carries aren't an consequence for them. But what about the rest of the states? In that location are no difficult-set rules, but Goetz says that average weekend golfers on a half dozen,300-g course shouldn't be asked to fly their assurance much more than 130 yards.

8. Draw to calibration

For the purposes of the GOLF Mag + Nicklaus Design Claiming, contestants have been asked to submit their designs on eight.v" 10 11" newspaper. That's not a lot of space. But information technology's still important to try to depict to scale. What is that scale? Goetz says to think of it this way: one inch equals 200 feet.
